About Rethink the Runway
Who We Are
The seed for Rethink the Runway movement started as a vibrant showcase during SF Climate Week 2024, where over 350 attendees gathered at Hibernia San Francisco to celebrate sustainable innovation in fashion. What started as the Sustainable Fashion Exhibition has evolved into a movement led by Mira Musank and a growing team of passionate individuals committed to advancing sustainable fashion in the Bay Area.
Born during the Climatebase Fellowship Cohort 6 in Fall 2024, our initiative brings together changemakers from across the fashion ecosystem — innovators, brands, emerging designers, and community organizations — to champion the crucial intersections between fashion and climate action.
What We Do
Instead of hosting isolated events, we build momentum through continuous community engagement. We co-create and amplify events that bring sustainable fashion practices into climate conversations, working with mission-driven partners throughout the Bay Area. Our approach focuses on:
Community Collaboration: Partnering with local organizations to host workshops, screenings, and clothing swaps
Industry Engagement: Facilitating conversations between established brands and emerging innovators
Designer Support: Providing platforms for emerging sustainable designers and brands to showcase their work
Public Education: Creating accessible opportunities for consumers to learn about and engage with sustainable fashion
Starting in Spring 2025, we'll launch a series of events across the San Francisco Bay Area, culminating in a featured installation during SF Climate Week 2025 (April 19-28).
The Challenge We Address
The fashion industry accounts for approximately 10% of global carbon emissions—more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. Fast fashion's take-make-waste model has created an environmental crisis with over 92 million metric tons of textiles ending up in landfills annually. Resource extraction and textile overproduction continue to deplete ecosystems and harm communities worldwide.
Despite this massive impact, fashion is rarely centered in broader climate discussions. We're changing that narrative.
Our Mission
We unite changemakers to advance circular and regenerative fashion through three core objectives:
Bringing sustainable fashion practices into climate conversations
Spotlighting leading innovations and brands that advance circular solutions
Uplifting local community efforts and young designers
